A Proud Heritage of Nursing & Midwifery Education

The Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Korle Bu was established with a singular mission: to train competent, compassionate, and ethically grounded nurses and midwives to serve the healthcare needs of Ghana. Situated within the historic Korle Bu enclave — home to one of West Africa's leading teaching hospitals — the College has, over the decades, grown into a respected centre of excellence for pre-service health training.

The Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Korle Bu, established in 1945, is the premier nursing education institution in Ghana and West Africa. It was founded to train highly skilled indigenous nurses to replace expatriate professionals in the country's newly established hospitals.

The history of the college is defined by several key milestones:

• 1930s Midwifery Roots: While the main nursing college was founded in 1945, formal midwifery training at Korle Bu began earlier, with the first batch of trained midwives completing their final examinations in 1930.
• Pioneering Leadership: The establishment of the Nurses’ Training School was supervised by Agnes Yewande Savage, the first West African woman medical doctor. The college started with a foundation class of just six students in temporary accommodations in Kumasi before moving to its permanent premises at Korle Bu, Accra.
• The 2008 Merger: Until January 2, 2008, the Nurses' Training College and the Midwifery Training School operated as separate entities with two distinct principals. In line with the Ministry of Health policy, the two institutions were merged into a single administrative body.
• Modern Evolution: Today, the college operates as a premier public tertiary institution in Accra, affiliated with the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, KNUST and UCC. It offers programmes including Diploma in Registered General Nursing, Diploma in Registered Midwifery, Degree in Nursing and specialized programmes in Nephrology, Oncology, and Endocrinology.
