Personal Appearance

The college has standard uniform requirement for students pursuing nursing/midwifery programme in Ghana. The rationale behind the requirement comes from the belief that the client is the central focus of the nurse-client relationship therefore it is expected that the student nurse dresses simply but properly. Students MUST ALWAYS be in uniform for all school gathering and clinical experience.

The purpose of the professional attire is to:

  1. Identify the person as a student
  2. Promote the safety of the client and the student nurse
  3. Promote the development of trust by reducing barriers to the establishment of a therapeutic nurse-client relationship

The Uniform Requirements

Both Females and Males

  1. Name tag for easy identification in classroom and the ward
  2. All students are to purchase the college’s printed cloth and wear it on Fridays and during occasions as would be informed
  3. Shoes should be cleaned and polished always
  4. All students need a watch with second hand, stethoscope, scissors and thermometer for clinical work.
  5. Students must appear in prescribed uniform for duty/class
  6. Uniforms should be neat and clean at all times
  7. Hairdo must be simple and not touch the collar of the dress.
  8. Students may use small black/brown ribbon  
  9. Hair ribbon should match the colour of the dress
  10. There should be no colouring of hair apart from its original colour
  11. Shoes and sandals must be of the prescribed style and colour according to the school’s code of dressing
  12. Only stud shaped earrings can be worn with only one on each ear lobe
  13. Long nails, nail polish, neck chain, artificial nails, bracelets, are prohibited.
  14. Students must not wear apron and cap outside the hospital premises
  15. Belts must be properly worn

Female Students

  1. Tailored nurses green dress (2 inches below knee-length) with white round baby collar
  2. Black/brown full low soft healed shoe
  3. White apron 2 inches below the green uniform and a white cap for clinical work

Male Student

  1. Blue-black flying tie
  2. Short-sleeve white shirt
  3. A pair of Brown Khaki material trouser (no jeans khaki trousers)
  4. Short-sleeve white clinical coat
  5. Black/brown full low heal shoes (no colour marking on shoes)

Additional Requirements

  1. Hair: must be off the face and above the collar of dress or pulled back, natural colour tones only.
  2. Male students are NOT to WEAR BEARD and MOUSTACHE. Beards and moustache must be shave neat with hair on head kept clean and short always.
  3. Jewelry: only wedding ring on one finger, no other accessories are acceptable
  4. Scrub: wearing of scrub may be required in some practical areas

NB: students should follow uniform requirement in clinical areas

Feeding

The Korle Bu community abounds with a variety of catering/food joints including Dean Guest House and Cafeteria, Korle Bu Dining, Mannna Catering Services, Service Canteen and Med-Dinner

Students can purchase food from the canteens on the campus or several others that are within the Korle Bu Community students are not allowed to cook at the hostels but can keep a kerosene stove for warming their food. It should be noted that NO GAS OR ELECTRICAL stoves are allowed.

General Behaviour

  1. It is compulsory for all students to attend all college activities
  2. Criminal Abortion is strictly prohibited
  3. Complicity in carrying out abortion is strictly prohibited
  4. Use of mobile phones in the classroom, at the clinical area and at college functions is strictly prohibited
  5. Assault in any form is strictly prohibited
  6. Fighting is strictly prohibited
  7. Sexual offences such as rape and any sexual activity on campus are strictly prohibited.
  8. Students are not to engage in sexual misconduct while in college whether kissing, licking lips, caressing or fondling with any part of the body of the opposite sex.
  9. Homosexualism / lesbianism is forbidden in the school
  10. A female or male student should not have any sexual relation with the tutor/opposite sex
  11. Students of the opposite sex are not allowed to stand in obscure corners during day or night
  12. Female students are not allowed to go to male tutors apartment and vice versa without any invitation or just cause.
  13. Students must be polite and respectful to all manner of persons at all times
  14. False information or spreading of false information is an offence
  15. Defamation of character or deliberate distortion of fact/character assassination and writing anonymous letters are all serious offences.
  16. Impersonation is a serious offence
  17. Disclosure of official information-: unauthorised disclosure of official information to any member of the public is an offence.
  18. Flouting the authority of the principal/staff/prefects/seniors is a very serious offence
  19. Smoking is strictly prohibited
  20. The possession and/or use of drugs (indian hemp, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, harshish, LSD, or any other narcotic drug recognized as such and (punishable by the laws of Ghana) are strictly prohibited.
  21. Buying, drinking/selling of alcohol in any form is strictly forbidden.
  22. Stealing in any form is strictly forbidden.
  23. Malingering/truancy during classes, clinicals and during official functions/ activities is prohibited.
  24. Students are not allowed to possess any form of arms or ammunition, whether licensed or unlicensed on campus. This is strictly forbidden.

Sick Reporting

Korle Bu Teaching Hospital which is very close to the college provides health services to students who have health problems. Students pay for services rendered and those who have NHIS are covered with the scheme.

  1. All students must register with the National Health Insurance Scheme
  2. All sick students should report to the health prefect for further instructions
  3. Sick students must be registered in the sick reporting book before going to the hospital
  4. Feedback from the hospital must be given to the tutor or hostel warden for necessary action.
  5. Those students who need to recuperate are admitted to the college’s sick bay under the care of a college nurse.

Communication

  1. No student shall communicate either directly or indirectly to the press or to any unauthorized person, any official school information without authority from the principal
  2. The principal shall be informed of the intent to produce any souvenir, envelopes, writing pad, ‘T’ shirt, etc.) And the principal’s approval shall be obtained for student publication such as newsletter, magazine, journal etc. within the college.
  3. A copy of each souvenir should be lodged with the principal
  4. Each issue of periodical shall state the name of the editor, the membership of the editorial board and publisher.
  5. The members of the editorial board shall be held jointly and severally responsible for the contents of each issue of publication.
  6. All students should follow the prescribed channels of communication to have their concerns addressed

Protest Marches, Parades and Demonstrations

  1. Any student(s) who wish to organize a protest march, parade, float or demonstration in the college shall notify the principal in writing through the SRC.
  2. Such notice shall be given to the principal at least seven (7) days before the protest march, parade, or demonstration is due to begin. The principal shall in turn inform the police at least five (5) days in advance according to the law and order Act.
  3. The notification shall state the purpose of the protest march, float, parade or demonstration and the names of the organiser(s) as well as the route.
  4. Permit must be obtained from the police before the commencement of the march and the principal must be notified.
  5. The Police shall reserve the right to forbid the protest march, parade or demonstration, float if his/her opinion of the march is likely to:
  6. Lead to a breach of the peace
  7. Cause serious interference with activities of the college
  8. Expose students to danger.
  9. Staging a protest march, float, parade or demonstration does not necessarily imply that the college accepts or sympathizes with the stated objectives of the march.

Incitement to Rioting: Students are not to incite riot or indulge themselves in rioting.

Use of Vehicles of the Institution

  1. All students are entitled to the use of the institutions vehicles for educational, curricular or co-curricular activities.
  2. The use of the college vehicle is subject to the availability, approval by the transport officer and certification by the principal.
  3. All requests for the use of the vehicle shall be submitted in writing to the transport officer through the SRC at least five (5) days before the date of the journey except in emergencies.
  4. Each requisition shall state the following:
  5. Destination
  6. Purpose of the journey
  7. Date vehicle will be required
  8. Time of departure
  9. Date and estimated time of return
